Afghanistan: Report blames Taliban for lack of peace
Karzai administration's failure to hold talks has led to Taliban insurgency, report says
A US-based study published this week has blamed the Taliban for the lack of peace in Afghanistan.
The document has also accused the US and the Karzai administration of "the vast majority" of the problems plaguing the country.
"For years, the US and Pakistan, through their support for the Taliban, have not only prolonged the conflict but have also created an environment conducive to the insurgent movement," the study said.
The US has long backed the Afghan government's attempts to end the insurgency.
On the other hand, Pakistan supports the Taliban because it believes the country will not remain a democracy if the former rulers are removed from power, the report pointed out.
The study - titled Afghanistan: Peace on the Brink: Can the US, India, and Pakistan Resolve Conflict in Afghanistan? - was commissioned by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) and was written by experts based in Washington.
It was written to look into the prospects for peace, stability, and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
"Both the US and Pakistan have supported the Taliban as a strategic element of a counterinsurgency strategy that has so far failed," the document said.
